What you need to know:
This is a single-volume systematic theolgy text published first in 1949, revised in 1979. Dr. Thiessen taught at Dallas Theological Seminary, and was contemporary there with both Lewis Sperry Chafer and John Walvoord.
The theological content is conservative, evangelical, Calvinistic, and premillennial, based on foundational concepts including the sovereignty of God, biblical inerrancy, and literal interpretation.
The doctrines coverend are fully in line with traditional Baptist denominations as well as most non-denominational Bible churches (I can’t speak to the beliefs of other Protestant denominations). Thiessen is also in harmony with popular study Bible notes from people like Scofield, Thompson, and Ryrie. In terms of theological texts, Thiessen is in full agreement with Chafer’s 8-volume classic, “Systematic Theology”, which is probably the defacto standard for this system of theology.
Why I’m blogging it:
I own a lot of theolgy texts, but this is one of three which I rely on, and this is the one I always pick up first. I like the way it’s written; the logic, the concise presentation – lots of inline partial quotes from references.
I’ve given this book away and replaced it twice, because it’s great for new Christians who are just starting to explore their faith.
Availability:
This is an old one – published in 1949, revised in 1979, latest reprint I know of in 1999. Used copies are available online for around $20, and seem to be in fair supply.
